TIMES OF LACHLAN AND ELIZABETH MACQUARIE

June 1790. Vessel: Surprise. Status: Soldier. Common Law Wife: Elizabeth
Watts. Died: 4th April
1813 at Pitt St. Sydney, N.S.W. Buried: 6th April 1813 at Old
Burial Ground, Sydney. Father: Thomas Morris. Mother: Jane Glover.
Prior to the Macquarie era the following children were born to James
and Elizabeth:- Jane born 6th August 1794.
James born 25th October 1795.
William born 18th October 1797.
Thomas born 20th December 1798.
Ann born 26th August 1800.
Elizabeth born 26th July 1802.
Hannah born 30th July 1804.
John born 8th July 1806.
George born 2nd August 1808.
Elizabeth born cSeptember 1809.
Charles born 4th December 1810.
On the 6th
August 1789, James enlisted in the New South Wales Corps as a private
and he embarked on the Surprise on the 13th November 1789. He was
stationed in Sydney and in August 1794 he had a child named Jane with
Elizabeth Watts, a dairymaid who had also arrived free on the Bellona
in January 1793. James was granted 19 acres in the district of
Petersham which he later sold. In total James had eleven children
ranging from the time period of 1794 to 1810.
After being discharged
from the NSW Corps, he acquired a land grant of 160 acres on the banks
of the Nepean River. James owned a general store and was a dealer and a
businessman and later in 1809 he operated a public house called ‘The
Hope’. He was granted another 120 acres at Botany Bay, and in March
1812 he sold his farm on the Nepean River. James died aged 54 on the
April 1813 while Elizabeth died aged 49 on 10th July 1824. There is no
marriage documented between Elizabeth and James, however she was buried
as Elizabeth Morris.
