Profile: Joseph Varney was tried at Surrey Quarter Sessions on the 23 October 1818 for stealing and was sentenced to 7 years transportation. He was a shoemaker by trade. He married Clara Saunders but both Clara and Joseph had previous liaisons. Clara had four children to George Harvey and Joseph had a daughter with a Mary. No children were born to Joseph and Clara during the Macquarie Era. After the Macquarie Era children born were: Joseph Samuel b.1838, Charles b.1839, William b.1841, Eliza b.1842, Alfred b.1844, John b.1845, Esther b.1847, Harriet b.1848, Emily b.1850, Thomas Edward b.1854, Lydia Jane b.1857.
